The Response of Northumberland County Council to a Request to Promote the Village's Petition

This response was sent by Mike Bird, Team Leader (Area and Regulatory) Democratic Services and received on September 24th 2009

"A petition has been received from the Craster Community Development Trust. As it is about a service that the Council is not responsible for, Members may wish to consider whether they would like to make representations on the petitioner’s behalf to the appropriate organisation, as per the Council’s petition procedure. The petition reads:

“The Craster Community Development Trust beg to present this petition to the Craster Parish Council.

The signatories of the petition are concerned at the lack of mobile telephone reception in Craster and ask the Parish Council to make every effort to get mobile telephone operators to supply this service within the Craster Area.

The Development Trust has 599 signatories and 1 email response."

The Northumberland County Council minute for the appropriate meeting is as follows.

38. PETITIONS – CRASTER COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT TRUST

A petition has been received from the Craster Community Development Trust. As it was about a service that the Council was not responsible for, Members were asked to consider whether they would like to make representations on the petitioner’s behalf to the appropriate organisation, as per the Council procedure.

The Chair informed the Committee that an extract from the Federation of Northumberland Development Trust had been circulated for Members’ information and added that the Parish Council hoped that Northumberland County Council would liaise with them in the petition.

A Member agreed with the article and added that it was important that both local residents and visitors were able to access mobile networks.

RESOLVED:-

a) That the petition be received

b) That representations be made at various levels by the Committee on the petitioner’s behalf to organisations such as AONB, Northumberland Tourism and Regeneration.

Mr. Bird concludes by saying.

"I understand that officers from the Policy and Partnerships service will be taking the next steps to investigate the issues on your behalf. I will confirm shortly who the officer contact is for further information and update."
