HELPFUL INFORMATION

The AONB designation exists to ensure that the natural beauty of the Northumberland Coast is conserved and enhanced for us and for future generations.The Northumberland Coast AONB was designated in 1958. It covers 39 miles of coast from Spittal to the Coquet estuary, reaching no more than two to three miles inland along its length.

The AONB designation is a sure indicator to visitors of the 'quality' of the landscape, which is recognised as the equivalent to a National Park. The AONB authorities, in meeting their statutory obligations, provide a great deal of information about the area, opportunities to learn more, events to participate in and opportunities to contribute. The Berwickshire & North Northumberland Coast European Marine Site is an area extending from Alnmouth in North East England to Fast Castle Head in south east Scotland, including the Farne Islands. It is an important conservation area and the web site presents much information about the area.
